African Gourmet Coffee
African gourmet coffee can come from different parts of the continent. But the similar climate in certain African countries is what causes coffee beans to share taste characteristics with other nearby countries.
At Kaldi, we currently carry coffee beans from the following four different African countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. We will explore common aromas and flavors associated with beans from these countries below.
The Flavor Profile
When it comes to flavor profile, coffees from Africa can be considered exotic. Many beans from Africa are dry processed, which works to infuse the beans with flavors of cherry and mucilage. This helps give their body a natural sweetness and beans from countries like Ethiopia and Kenya are known for having fruity and floral flavors. However, the flavor profile for African coffee beans can vary based on the species and location of the bean.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia is the largest producer of coffee in Africa. In fact, it is the geographic home of Arabica coffee — the species of coffee that is believed to be the first type of coffee cultivated. But other coffee beans in Ethiopia are also known for their unique flavors which are caused by the complex mix of species that are native to the country.
Ethiopian coffee beans have notes of jasmine, bergamot, and blueberry. The body is not very strong with a pleasant, or mild, acidity. This gives Ethiopian coffees a heavy taste that almost has a wine tang that complements the floral aromas found in the beans.
Ethiopian Harrar
Ethiopian Harrar coffee smells like fruit with a hint of light wood notes. This is further enhanced with the blackberry and currant flavor that is present. Overall, these coffee beans have medium, smooth body.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe
Our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee beans have a floral aroma that mixes with flavors of blueberry, strawberry, and milk chocolate.Combine this flavor and aroma with the milky body and incredible balance for an amazing Ethiopian coffee.
Kenya
Kenya is a country that didn’t start growing coffee beans until the 1900s — which is very late when compared to countries like Ethiopia which started producing coffee as early as the 1600s.
Kenyan coffee beans have a fruity and floral aroma, including hints of nutmeg and berry. This aroma fits the profile of the region. These beans also have a sweetness reminiscent of brown sugar or a dark fruit, like citrus, berry, and notes of spice and tobacco. Ultimately, these coffee beans have both a heavy body and very bright acidity.
Tanzania
Tanzanian coffee beans are somewhat similar to Kenyan coffee beans with their notes of berry and fruity flavor, along with the occasional notes of cedar. This gives the entire bean a full body that tastes intense and creamy. Some of the flavors we notice in our Tanzanian coffee beans include notes of black tea, chocolate, blackberry, and kiwi with a lemon acidity that creates a sweet, well-balanced, and complex experience.
Zimbabwe
Again, fitting the profile of African coffee beans, coffee from Zimbabwe has an acidity that is berry-like and citrusy. The flavors in our Zimbabwean coffee beans include caramel, chocolate, grapes, tobacco, and woody notes that create a sweet coffee. Coffee beans from Zimbabwe are clean and bright with a medium body that creates a complex, full-body coffee.
