Indonesian Gourmet Wholesale Coffee Beans

Indonesia produces some delicious and aromatic coffees. Coffee beans from this area are known for being complex with low acidity and a density that makes them ideal for darker roasting.

In Indonesia, a processing method called “giling basah” is widely used. It is a type of “wet hulling” that removes the hulls of the coffee beans by letting the coffee cherry dry on the bean for a short period of time before being washed and removed. This process leaves some flavors of the pulp and the fruit on the bean. As a whole, this “wet hulling” process is supposed to reduce the acidity of the bean while increasing the body.

At Kaldi, we carry different types of coffee beans from Indonesia, including our Sumatran, New Guinea, Indian Monsoon Malabar, and Java Jampit coffee beans.

Sumatran Coffee Beans

Sumatra is the Republic of Indonesia’s largest island. Coffee trees were originally brought to this island in the 19th century by the Dutch who wanted to compete with the Arabic monopoly on coffee cultivation — and it worked. The way these beans are dried helps create a coffee bean that has a full body, concentrated flavor, herbal nuances, and a spicy finish. In addition, Sumatran coffee beans have low acidity and a richness that lingers.

New Guinea Coffee Beans

Coffee beans from New Guinea are known for their full body and bright acidity. A set of complex flavors, including sweetness mixed with pungent notes of citrus, is what makes this coffee bean stand out. Coffee beans grown on this island are also wet processed using the “wet hulling” method. In fact, this process creates a regularity in the shape of the coffee beans.

Indian Monsoon Malabar Coffee Beans

Indian Monsoon Malabar coffee beans are from the remote Malabar coast of Karantaka, in India. The monsoon winds from the Malabar coast, in addition to the shady coconut beachers, have helped shape the flavor of our unique Indian Monsoon Malabar coffee beans. India is known for these Monsoon Malabar beans and their undertones of mellowed sweetness and earthy wood.

Java Jampit Coffee Beans

Did you know that “java” got its nickname from the Indonesian island of Java?

It was Dutch colonists, much like with Sumatra coffee beans, who established plantations on Java. After those plantations were created, Java became the largest supplier of coffee to Europe until it was surpassed by Brazil in the mid-nineteenth century.

Java Jampit coffee beans are from the Jampit estate, one of the only coffee plantations that is owned by the Java government. These coffee beans are complex with their notes of chocolate that mix with the heavy body, herbal tones, and flavors of honey, lemon, and stone fruits.
