Espresso Excellence: Extracting the Perfect Shot with the Right Roast!

We all adore espresso. It’s the cornerstone of our favorite festive drinks and the perfect finale to a delightful dessert. But what truly sets the stage for the PERFECT espresso? You might assume that the boldest, darkest espresso roast creates the ultimate base for your cappuccino, but is that really the case? Let’s dive into what truly makes espresso pop!

So… is a French Roast, aka Extra Dark Roast, the best choice for espresso? While I personally love the bold flavor that comes with a French roast, it turns out it’s actually the WORST choice for your espresso coffee beans.

What makes a French Roast so special is the extended roasting time. However, the longer you roast coffee, the more the natural oils of the coffee bean surface. Due to these oils, this dark and rich roast has the potential to gum up your grinder when used for espresso, and we don't recommend selecting this roast for your Espresso Beans.

In fact, the duration for which you plan on keeping your beans in stock impacts the degree of roast you should choose. Over time, the natural oils of the bean will rise to the surface. So, if it takes you a little longer to go through your Espresso beans, then we recommend choosing our City Roast, aka Light Roast. The City Roast maintains the truest taste characteristics of the bean, as it is not roasted for nearly as long as our darker roasts. This also means that the beans do not get nearly as oily during the roasting process, so it will take longer for the oils to rise to the surface.

If you go through your beans faster, say in about two weeks, then our Full City Roast is a great choice! Our Full City Roast is our Medium Roast. Since Espresso Coffee is already bold in flavor, you don’t need too much assistance getting that rich flavor. However, having the beans roasted for a touch longer will help cut down the acidity of the bean.

Finally, if you are going through espresso like there’s no tomorrow, then go crazy and order your beans in an Italian Roast. Yes, there will be more oils rising to the surface, but not nearly as much as a French Roast. It truly captures the boldness of the bean. Be wary, as if these beans hang around for too long, then they will continue to get oily, and you run the risk of gumming up your grinder. However, when kept for a short amount of time, this roast is a great choice for your espresso beans.
