Espresso Drinks

If you’re a coffee lover, you’re no stranger to espresso — a specialty drink made by forcing pressurized boiling water through finely-ground coffee beans. And the world of coffee drinks is filled with many different nuances — and even variations of these common espresso drinks. As a commercial espresso machine owner or espresso-lover, learn how we make some of these amazing espresso drinks!

Short Shot

The short or ristretto shot is made with the normal amount of coffee used for an espresso shot but less water to give you ¾-ounce of espresso (brewed for about 15–18 seconds). This ratio gives you a concentrated shot of espresso that tastes richer and sweeter.

Long Shot

While a short shot is less water than an espresso shot, a long shot has double the amount of water with the same amount of coffee (brewed for about 20–25 seconds). This process pulls the bitterness out of the grounds for a different flavor.

Macchiato

“Macchiato” means “stained.” To make this drink, take a straight shot of espresso and top it with a spoonful of foam so the espresso is “stained” with that foam.

Con Panna

“Con panna” means “espresso with cream.” For a con panna drink, take a shot of espresso and top it with a small amount of whipped cream, making a simple and delicious drink.

Cappuccino

A cappuccino is made with espresso and foam. Start with a shot of espresso and top with wet foam for a bold taste with some sweetness from the foam. The cappuccino should have a glossy sheen to it.

Americano

An americano takes a single shot of espresso and adds six ounces of hot water to give you an espresso drink that is similar to the bold, strong taste of drip coffee.

Latte

A cafe latte takes a straight shot of espresso that is filled with steamed milk. After that, the latte is topped with a small amount of foam that should give it a glossy appearance similar to a cappuccino.

Flavored Latte

A flavored latte is the same as a latte but with added flavor. Take your shot of espresso, fill with steamed milk, add your chosen flavor of Torani syrup, and top with a small amount of foam. These flavored lattes can be finished with some whipped cream or toppings.

Mocha

While lattes are made with syrups, mochas are made with sauces. So to make a cafe mocha, take a shot of espresso, add a Torani sauce, fill with steamed milk, top with a small amount of foam, and finish with some whipped cream!
