Environmentally-Friendly Consumers

As consumers — or business owners — we can all do our part to help protect the environment. Learn five easy changes you can make that will have a positive impact on the environment.

Water Bottles

Purchasing a water bottle whenever you’re out can make a large impact on the amount of plastic in the world. In fact, Forbes reported that every minute, one million plastic water bottles are bought around the world. But most coffee shops and other food businesses have a space for you to refill water. So instead of opting for pre-filled plastic, come prepared with your own water bottle.

Reusable Snack Bags

Do you find yourself snacking often when you’re out or at work? Or do you like to pair a snack with your favorite cup of coffee. While single-packaged foods make great midday snacks, think about the waste each of those snacks create. Instead, buy large or bulk bags of food at home and package them individually in reusable snack bags. Or, if you need to buy food while you’re out, consider bringing your own reusable snack bags or choosing something on the menu that doesn’t come prepackaged or with single-use waste.

Metal Straws

When spring and summer come, we love our iced espresso drinks just as much as anyone else. But think about some of the unnecessary waste you’re creating from your iced drink. Instead of opting for a disposable, one-time use straw, bring your own! Metal straws have jumped in popularity as more and more people try to limit their straw and plastic waste. There are even metal straws that fold up into a compact carrying case so you’re never without a sustainable option!

Recycle

When possible, recycle what you can. From the cardboard sleeve on your coffee to any recyclable materials from your products, take extra notice to what you’re throwing into a waste bin. Was that something you could have recycled?

Buy Fresh Food

Whether you own a coffee shop, small business, or do all the shopping for your home — buy fresh, sustainable, and local. When you can, buy your fresh produce and vegetables from a local farm. Then find eco-conscious suppliers for your other products.

For example, at Kaldi we have a wide selection of beans that are USDA Organic Certified or comply with other environmentally-friendly standards to give you coffee that benefits small farmers while also taking care of the planet.
