Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Different studies have found some potential health benefits associated with drinking coffee. But, keep in mind, we’re just talking black coffee — putting all of the additives, like sugar and cream, aside.

First, your favorite brew of coffee is sure to give you an energy boost in the morning due to the caffeine content that naturally exists in the bean. That fact is what draws many coffee drinkers to coffee in the first place! But beyond that, some doctors are noticing other health benefits that coffee drinkers show when compared to non-coffee drinkers.

But when it comes to these different health benefits of coffee, we don’t want you to just take our word for it. Johns Hopkins Medicine shared some information about the different health benefits they’ve found associated with coffee.

When they looked at coffee drinkers, they found that they were less likely to die from different causes — like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and diabetes — suggesting a link between coffee and those leading causes of death. Coffee also seems to have a protective effect on your liver as coffee drinkers more often have enzyme levels in the healthier range when compared to people who don’t drink coffee.

In addition, Johns Hopkins mentioned a link between dark roast coffee and a decrease in breakage of DNA strands. While these breakages occur naturally, they can lead to cancer or other tumors if they are not repaired by your body.

Information published by Senior Faculty Editor at Harvard Health Publishing, Robert H. Shmerling, MD, further echoed these health benefits associated with coffee. They found that drinking coffee might reduce the risk of:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Colon, Uterine, & Liver Cancer

Another study Shmerling mentions showed an 8–15% reduction in the risk of death from coffee consumers.

While studies are still being done on these different health benefits, our coffee drinkers can rest assured knowing that doctors and other scientists have found positive links between black coffee and your body’s overall health.
