What Makes Colombian Coffee Taste So Great?

Coffee is grown all around the world but Colombian coffee has become renowned for its delicious taste and high quality. But what makes Colombian stand out in the market? There are different factors that play into what gives Colombian coffee it’s distinct characteristics, like where the beans are grown and the type of beans.

Geography

As the name suggests, Colombian coffee is grown in Colombia. In fact, Colombia is the second-largest producer of coffee in the world (with Brazil being the first). This might seem surprising given Colombia's mountainous terrain, high rainfall, and tropical climate. But these conditions create the perfect environment for Colombian coffee beans to thrive.

This geographical location is also what contributes to the rich, fruity flavor of Colombian coffee.

Bean Type

As we talked about in our Arabica Beans vs. Robusta Beans blog post, there are two primary coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are naturally sweeter and fruitier than their robusta counterparts. In Colombia, all of their coffee beans are arabica, further contributing to the quality and superior taste of their coffee.

Harvest Style

How beans are harvested also contributes to the final taste and quality of the coffee. A large portion of Colombian beans are grown on steep slopes, but this doesn’t stop farmers from hand-picking these beans.

While there are machines that have the ability to harvest and collect coffee beans, those machines are unable to tell the ripeness of each individual bean. When farmers hand-pick the beans, they are able to ensure that each bean selected is the best quality possible.

Farm Size

In addition to hand picking coffee beans, most Colombian coffee is grown on small family farms, usually no more than 12 acres. This, combined with the climate of Colombia, creates small batches of Colombian coffee that one farm has invested all of their resources and time into cultivating. As a result, you get a high-quality Colombian coffee bean.
